Mahjong Garden combines open-side pair-removal rules with a calm garden setting. The playable Garden Pairing board is built and hosted by MahjongWiki: match identical symbol-only tiles, open each row from its ends, and clear the complete layout.

The garden theme changes the atmosphere, not the legal moves. You still win by managing access and pairing identical tiles without trapping their remaining copies.

How to play Mahjong Garden

Select two identical free tiles to remove them. This compact board has one layer, so a tile is free when at least one long side is open. A visible piece blocked between neighbors cannot be selected yet.

Use a mouse on desktop or tap on a phone or tablet. When a selection fails, check both sides instead of assuming the game missed your input.

The objective is to empty the board. Each pair changes the layout, so the best legal match is usually the one that opens more choices.

Read the garden as a path

Begin with the ends of each row. These pieces act like gates: removing a pair reveals the next positions and may open a row from its second direction.

Before choosing a pair, compare three outcomes:

• how many new tiles it uncovers;
• whether it opens a new side of a blocked row;
• whether the remaining copies of that symbol can still meet later.

A pair that exposes two pieces is normally stronger than one that changes no access. Keep neutral edge pairs in reserve when they can provide a guaranteed move later.

Handle repeated symbols

The board can contain a symbol in more than one row. When several copies become available, more than one pairing may be possible. Pair across pressure areas when that opens both rows instead of consuming two tiles from the same easy edge.

Avoid clearing the two most flexible copies when the remaining matches are trapped behind different row ends. Many apparent dead ends begin with a poor repeated-symbol pairing several moves earlier.

A calm scan is faster

The garden presentation encourages a relaxed pace, but calm play is also efficient. Scan the left and right ends of all six rows in a fixed order. This prevents you from checking the same blocked cluster repeatedly.

Pause after a large reveal. The next useful match may appear on the opposite side of the board. If a hint is available, use it after one systematic scan and study why the pair was easy to miss.

Common mistakes

Do not select pairs only because their artwork is prominent. Decorative contrast can pull your attention away from quieter symbols. Compare the full face, not only its color.

Do not clear one side exclusively. A balanced board preserves access on several fronts. Finally, remember that visible and free are different: a tile still needs an open left or right side.
