The five building blocks of a mahjong hand

Only numbered suits make sequences. Winds and dragons can form pairs, triplets, or quads, but never a sequence.

The standard four-sets-and-a-pair hand

A normal complete hand can be written as:

Set + set + set + set + pair = 14-tile winning structure

For example: 2-3-4 dots, 6-7-8 dots, three 5 bamboo, three white dragons, and a pair of South winds.

Structure alone may not be enough. Riichi requires at least one yaku. MCR requires at least 8 points excluding flowers. A Hong Kong table may require a minimum number of fan. Always separate “complete shape” from “legal scoring hand.”

Why a kong does not break the hand count

A kong contains four physical tiles but occupies one set position. After declaring it, the player draws a replacement tile. That extra draw restores the number of usable groups, so a hand with one declared kong can physically contain 15 tiles while still representing four sets and one pair.

If a player’s tile count looks unusual, count structural sets and confirmed replacement draws before calling the hand invalid.

Open versus concealed hands

A concealed hand keeps its working tiles hidden and normally draws its winning material without exposing a called set. An open hand has at least one set claimed from another player’s discard.

Opening a hand can increase speed but reduce value or remove legal patterns. In riichi, riichi itself requires a concealed ready hand, and several yaku lose value or disappear when open. MCR and Hong Kong rules apply their own concealment patterns.

Before claiming a discard, ask:

  1. Does the call move the hand closer to completion?
  2. Will the intended scoring pattern remain legal when open?
  3. Does the exposed set reveal too much about the hand?
  4. Is keeping the hand concealed worth the slower route?

Learn incomplete shapes, not only finished sets

Most decisions happen before a set is complete. Two-tile shapes differ in how many draws improve them:

  • Open-ended: 4-5 can accept 3 or 6.
  • Closed/gapped: 4-6 accepts only 5.
  • Edge: 1-2 accepts only 3; 8-9 accepts only 7.
  • Pair: two identical tiles can become a triplet or remain the final pair.
  • Single tile: needs a second connected tile before it becomes flexible.

Common waits in a ready hand

A hand is ready or tenpai when one more legal tile completes it. The final wait may be:

Not every structural completion is a legal win. In riichi, furiten may block ron; across variants, the completed hand still needs its minimum value.

Special winning hands

Several rulesets recognize structures outside the normal formula.

Seven pairs

Seven pairs form a special hand in riichi and MCR, but duplicate handling differs. Standard riichi requires seven different pair types; MCR can treat four identical concealed tiles as two pairs. Check the exact scoring rules before arranging the hand.

Thirteen orphans

Variant-specific patterns

MCR lists other special forms, while local Chinese variants may use 16-tile hands or unique wildcards. American hands follow the annual card and can include singles, pairs, pungs, kongs, and quints in exact printed arrangements.

How to read an American mahjong hand

Start with the current card, not the four-sets-and-a-pair formula. For each promising line, check:

  • number pattern and year digits;
  • color relationships, which represent suits;
  • groups marked as pairs, pungs, kongs, quints, or singles;
  • concealed versus exposed status; and
  • positions where jokers are allowed.

Two hands with similar-looking groups can belong to different card lines. The printed line is the legal definition.

A hand-reading checklist

When reviewing any hand, work in this order:

  1. Name the ruleset. Do not infer it from the tiles alone.
  2. Count the tiles. Account for declared kongs and replacements.
  3. Mark complete sets. Keep one possible pair available.
  4. Circle incomplete shapes. Compare how many tiles improve each one.
  5. Identify the likely wait. List every tile that completes the structure.
  6. Prove legal value. Find the yaku, fan, MCR points, or American card line.

Use a cheat sheet without becoming dependent on it

A useful mahjong hands cheat sheet should show shapes, waits, and variant assumptions. It should not present a mixture of yaku, MCR scoring elements, and American card hands as one list.

Practice with open tiles: build a complete hand, remove one tile, and ask another player to name every winning draw. This trains recognition and exposes false waits quickly.

For formal definitions and edge cases, use the WRC rules and yaku materials for riichi and the European Mahjong Association’s MCR rulebook for competition mahjong. Neither reference defines American card hands.

Hand rule: first prove the shape, then prove the score. A complete-looking hand is not automatically a legal win.
