American Mahjong Card 2026: How to Read It

The 2026 American Mah Jongg card is the current annual reference listing the legal hands for National Mah Jongg League-style play. It is part rules document, part hand menu, and part score sheet. It is not a deck of playing cards.

This guide teaches the card’s grammar without reproducing its copyrighted hand lines.

2026 NMJL card: verified buying details

As checked on July 21, 2026, the official National Mah Jongg League store lists:

The official page notes that prices may change and that international postage is additional. Check the live store before ordering; the date above prevents a time-sensitive price from looking permanent.

Other publishers issue their own American mahjong cards. They can be valid for games organized around those cards, but their hands are not interchangeable with the NMJL card. “2026 card” does not by itself mean “2026 NMJL card.”

What an American mahjong card does

Every line represents one complete 14-tile winning hand. The card tells you:

• which ranks, winds, dragons, or flowers appear;
• how identical tiles are grouped;
• which groups share or differ in suit;
• whether the hand may be exposed or must remain concealed;
• the printed value of the hand.

It does not replace the general procedures for the Charleston, dealing, calls, joker exchanges, dead hands, or disputes. Use the current official rules alongside the card.

Read a line in six steps

1. Start with the section heading

Sections organize related structures, such as the current year, consecutive ranks, odds, evens, winds and dragons, and other patterns. The heading narrows the idea; it does not change the meaning of the tile symbols.

2. Count the groups

Spaces separate functional groups. Two identical symbols form a pair, three a pung, four a kong, and five a quint. Count all positions to confirm the line totals 14 tiles.

3. Translate letters and zero

• N, E, W, S: winds
• D: dragon
• F: flower
• 0: white dragon used as zero

Numbers normally denote suit ranks or digits within the year structure. Read the line’s note and section context before assigning actual tiles.

4. Map print colors to suits

Card colors encode relationships:

• Same color = same suit.
• Different colors = different suits.
• A color is not tied to a physical suit.

For example, a same-colored numeric group could be dots in one player’s hand and craks in another legal interpretation. What matters is consistency within the line.

5. Check dragons and flowers

In American card use, red dragon corresponds with craks, green dragon with bams, and white dragon with dots—except where white dragon functions as zero. Flowers are suitless.

Do not apply those American notation relationships to a Chinese or riichi ruleset.

6. Check exposure status and value

A concealed line must remain unexposed during normal play. A discard may generally be called only when it completes Mah Jongg. For an exposable line, you may call eligible groups according to the rules.

Finally, note the printed score. Do not choose a higher-value hand before confirming your rack can preserve its pairs, suit relationships, and concealment requirement.

How to choose a hand without tunnel vision

After the deal, compare sections, not every line. Identify repeated numbers, useful pairs, flowers, winds, and suit concentration. Keep two or three lines that share a core.

During the Charleston, pass tiles outside all candidate lines. After the exchange, choose a primary line and one nearby fallback. Re-evaluate when an exposure or several visible discards make a needed tile scarce.

The goal is not to memorize the whole card. It is to move efficiently from section → line family → exact legal line.

Joker check

A joker may stand in for a tile only in an eligible group of three or more. It cannot fill a single or pair. This restriction comes from the general rules even when the line’s typography does not repeat it.

Before declaring Mah Jongg, point to every joker and name the group it completes. Review American joker rules if any group is ambiguous.

American mahjong card 2025 vs 2026

The 2025 and 2026 cards have different hand lines. Once a table is playing the 2026 NMJL card, a complete 2025 line is not a legal 2026 hand.

You can keep a 2025 card for collection, comparison, or a private game where every player explicitly agrees to use it. Label archived cards clearly so a beginner does not bring the wrong year to current open play.

Core skills transfer across years: reading color relationships, recognizing group sizes, protecting pairs, using jokers legally, and maintaining flexible candidate lines. Exact hand memorization does not.

Copyright and legitimate access

The card’s selection and arrangement of hand lines is copyrighted content. MahjongWiki does not publish scans, photographs, full transcriptions, printable substitutes, or line-by-line reconstructions.

Avoid websites and social posts offering a “free 2026 card PDF.” Besides the copyright problem, an incomplete or mistyped line can invalidate a game. Buy a card from the NMJL official store or use authorized digital access.

When sharing table photos, turn the card face down or frame it out. Teaching the notation is useful; distributing the full card is not necessary.

First practice session

Use an open rack and select one section. For each line, say aloud:

1. total tiles;
2. group sizes;
3. number of suits;
4. required dragons or flowers;
5. exposed or concealed status;
6. where jokers could legally appear.
