Regional variants may use other totals, so a box labeled only “mahjong” is not enough to identify the intended rules.

The 136-tile base, calculated

Every standard suit has nine ranks and four copies of each rank:

• Dots: 9 × 4 = 36
• Bamboo: 9 × 4 = 36
• Characters: 9 × 4 = 36

That gives 108 suited tiles.

The honors add:

• Four winds × four copies = 16
• Three dragons × four copies = 12

Why many Chinese sets have 144 tiles

A manufacturer may add blank replacements, spare jokers, scoring helpers, or publisher-specific tiles. These extras protect the set from loss and support alternative rules; they do not automatically enter the wall.

2. Confirm four copies of each wind and dragon.
3. Separate unique flowers and seasons.

Japanese riichi uses 136 active tiles and no flowers or jokers. A set may include a red 5 Dot, red 5 Bamboo, and one or more red 5 Characters depending on the rulebook. These are replacements, not additions: remove the corresponding ordinary five for each red five used.

Counting all ordinary and red fives together is a common inventory mistake. The active wall still totals 136.

Three-player counts

There is no universal three-player set, but common Japanese sanma removes ranks 2 through 8 of the character suit. Seven ranks × four copies removes 28 tiles:
