Mahjong Numbers: Read Every Suit 1-9

Mahjong numbers run from 1 through 9 in each of the 3 suits: Dots, Bamboos, and Characters. A standard base set has 4 copies of every rank-and-suit identity, for 108 numbered tiles.

Arabic corner indices are a teaching feature found on many American and export sets. Traditional tiles may have no Western number at all.

Read the Dot suit

Dots are usually the easiest suit to count. The tile face shows 1 to 9 circles arranged as a visual pattern. Colors decorate the symbols but do not create separate suits.

The 1 Dot often has one large, ornate circle. Do not mistake its decorative center for several smaller dots. On dense designs, recognize the whole layout rather than recounting every circle during play.

Read the Bamboo suit

Bamboo ranks 2 through 9 use grouped stick-like marks. The 1 Bamboo is the exception: many sets show a bird, peacock, sparrow, or another illustrated symbol.

That bird still means 1 Bamboo. It can form 1-2-3 Bamboo and can pair with another copy of the same design. It is not a flower or independent bonus tile.

Some modern sets replace bamboo marks with simple rods or graphic icons. Count the repeated units and compare all 4 copies when a design is unfamiliar.

Read the Character suit

Character tiles normally combine a Chinese numeral with a repeated suit mark. The large central writing varies by typeface, carving, and age, which makes this the hardest suit for readers who do not know the numerals.

Use 3 cues:

1. Check for a small Arabic corner index if the set has one.
2. Compare the tile with the other ranks in the same suit.
3. Use a printed 1-9 reference during early games rather than guessing from color.

Color alone is unreliable. A red mark can appear on several ranks, while older sets may use faded or monochrome ink.

What numbered tiles can form

Numbered tiles can make:

• a pair of 2 identical rank-and-suit tiles;
• a pung of 3 identical tiles;
• a kong of 4 identical tiles;
• a chow of 3 consecutive ranks in the same suit.

Legal chows include 1-2-3 Dots, 4-5-6 Bamboos, and 7-8-9 Characters. These are not legal:

• 9-1-2, because ranks do not wrap;
• 3 Dot, 4 Bamboo, 5 Character, because suits cannot mix;
• East-South-West, because winds have no numerical order;
• red-green-white, because dragons are honors, not a sequence.

Terminals and inside tiles

Ranks 1 and 9 are terminals. Ranks 2 through 8 are inside tiles, also called simples in some rule explanations.

This distinction affects scoring and strategy. All Simples excludes terminals and honors. Outside-hand patterns require terminals or honors in defined positions. Thirteen Orphans uses all 6 terminal identities but none of the inside ranks.

Numbers on the American card

In American Mah Jongg, a printed number on the annual card names a rank, not a specific suit unless the color relationships require one. Card colors show whether groups use the same or different suits; they do not match the ink color on physical tiles.

Other symbols need separate interpretation:

• 0 means white dragon, commonly called Soap;
• N, E, W, and S are winds;
• D represents a dragon according to the card line;
• F represents a flower;
• repeated numbers may be singles, pairs, pungs, kongs, or quints depending on grouping.

A visible run such as 123 on a card is not automatically a Chinese-style chow. Read the spacing, colors, and line instructions with the American card guide.

Red fives and other special markings

Some riichi sets replace one ordinary 5 in a suit with a red 5. It remains rank 5 of that suit and fits the same sequences and identical groups; the red marking supplies a bonus under rules that use red fives.

American index numbers, flower numbers, and season numbers are also not new ranks. A number printed on a flower can identify traditional order or seat association, while American flowers remain interchangeable for card purposes.

Fast recognition practice

1. Sort all numbered tiles into the 3 suits.
2. Build a 1-9 row for each suit.
3. Stack the other 3 copies behind every identity.
4. Remove the corner-index advantage by covering only that small area.
5. Call out random tiles as “rank + suit,” such as “7 Dot.”
6. Build edge chows and middle chows from each row.

This trains the visual pattern while keeping English labels consistent.
