Mahjong King is a timed connect puzzle, not Mahjong Solitaire. In MahjongWiki’s playable Crown Connect, you remove identical tiles only when empty space can join them with no more than three straight segments.

That is the same core geometry often called Mahjong Link or Onet. The timer and limited assistance make route recognition as important as symbol matching.

How to play Mahjong King

Select one tile, then an identical partner. A valid path can be straight, turn once, or turn twice. It cannot pass through another tile, and a third corner makes the connection illegal.

Click with a mouse or tap on mobile. Clear all tiles before the countdown ends. The game provides hint and reshuffle controls, so treat them as recovery options rather than routine moves.

Start at edges and corners

Perimeter tiles have access to the empty border and usually offer the simplest connections. Clear obvious outer pairs first, then use the new gaps as lanes into the center.

Prefer matches that join empty spaces. A single isolated hole may help once; a continuous row or column can support several later paths. After every edge clear, rescan the tiles aligned with the new lane.

Distance does not determine difficulty. Two tiles far apart on an open border can connect easily, while neighboring interior tiles may have no valid two-turn route.

Trace paths before clicking

Mentally draw the route in three stages: leave the first tile, travel through an empty lane, then enter the partner’s row or column. Count each change of direction. If you already used two turns and are not aligned with the partner, the route fails.

This quick trace saves time compared with testing random pairs. It also reveals which obstruction must clear first.

Manage the clock

Use a consistent scan: top edge, right edge, bottom edge, left edge, then interior rows. The rhythm prevents duplicate searching when the timer adds pressure.

Do not spend ten seconds forcing one suspected pair. Move on, clear another route, and return after the board changes. A previously blocked pair may become legal without either tile moving.

Hints and reshuffles

A hint highlights a legal match but may not choose the pair that opens the strongest route. Compare the two highlighted positions and trace the empty corridor between them before selecting the pair.

Shuffle refreshes the remaining board’s matching opportunities. Save it for a genuine dead end or a late position where the remaining route is hard to create. Routine opening shuffles make it harder to learn how empty corridors develop.

Common connect mistakes

Players often confuse “three lines” with three turns. The rule allows three straight segments, so only two corners. Another mistake is ignoring the outer border, which can create long legal routes around a crowded board.

Finally, do not apply Mahjong Solitaire’s free-side rule. A connect tile may remain usable even when other pieces surround it, provided a legal empty path reaches its edge under this game’s rules.
