How to play Mahjong Slide

On desktop, use the arrow keys. On mobile, swipe in the direction you want the board to travel. Equal tiles merge once per move, while a new low tile enters after every successful slide. Build the 128 tile without filling all 16 cells.

The objective is to build the 128 tile, but an available merge is not automatically the best merge. Joining one pair may separate another or consume the open cell needed for your next setup. Read the board as an ordered value chain rather than a collection of isolated pictures.

Start by mapping the empty space

Before moving anything, locate open cells and rows that can accept new tiles. Empty space is your working resource. If you repeatedly push every tile into one crowded corner without setting up equal neighbors, future merges become awkward.

Give priority to moves that do at least one of the following:

• merge a high-value pair without splitting another pair;
• preserve at least two open cells after the move;
• align equal values along the same edge;
• keep the highest tile anchored in a corner.

This is why sliding puzzles feel different from Mahjong Solitaire. The question is not merely whether two values match, but whether the direction and final positions improve the full board.

Plan backward from the match

When you see equal values, imagine their final meeting row or column first. Then trace which full-board slides will align them. Because every tile moves together, a useful swipe should advance one pair without separating the next pair you intend to merge.

Prefer the plan with fewer setup moves and more empty cells. Extra movement adds a new low tile after every successful swipe, so direction changes without a clear purpose can fill the board quickly.

Keep the board organized

Grouping equal values along one edge reduces search time, but preserve at least one open row or column so the board can still shift. Think of empty cells as a workspace: the more you retain, the easier it is to bring the next equal pair together.

After every merge, pause. The new tile may create a better route than the move you were already planning. Re-evaluate the board before repeating the same direction.

Common slide mistakes

The most common mistake is chasing one visible pair while ignoring how the full board shifts. A second is letting the highest tile drift out of its corner, which makes the value order harder to maintain.

Players also repeat a direction that no longer changes the board. Instead, inspect which perpendicular move can create space without breaking your value chain. Treat a rejected move as information about the grid, not as a reason to swipe harder.

Slide, link, solitaire, or table mahjong?

In Mahjong Link, matching pieces need a legal connecting path. In Mahjong Solitaire, pieces must be uncovered with an open side. Mahjong Slide lets movement reshape the board itself. Traditional mahjong uses none of these puzzle rules; it is a multiplayer draw-and-discard game.
