Online mahjong can mean a four-player Riichi match, an American game with friends, a table simulator, a bot practice room, or a solo matching puzzle. Choose the ruleset first. A polished interface cannot make incompatible rules play together.

The playable frame on this page is intentionally labeled Mahjong Solitaire. It is a free solo board from TheMahjong.com, not multiplayer table mahjong. Use it for a quick matching game; use the platform guide below when you want draws, discards, calls, and opponents.

Choose the right online mahjong format

Before inviting anyone, agree on the variant. “Chinese mahjong” is not one universal ruleset, and American mahjong needs a current card. Riichi adds yaku, riichi declarations, furiten, dora, and its own scoring.

How to play mahjong online with friends

1. Pick one ruleset. Send every player the same rules reference before the session.
2. Create a private room. Share the room name, code, or invitation URL privately.
3. Confirm the settings. Check player count, bots, time limits, red fives, flowers, Charleston, and scoring options as relevant.
4. Use voice chat when helpful. It is especially useful in manual simulators where the software does not enforce every action.
5. Play one practice hand. Resolve interface questions before starting a scored session.

Never share an account password or payment details as a room invitation. A room link or code should be enough.

Playing Riichi mahjong online

Read the Riichi mahjong rules before entering ranked play. A complete-looking hand cannot win without at least one yaku. The client may offer buttons for chi, pon, kan, riichi, ron, or tsumo, but the prompt does not tell you whether calling is strategically wise.

Start in a casual or beginner room. Focus on legal wins, tile efficiency, and safe discards before chasing high-value hands. Review the discard pond every turn. Online speed makes it easy to click an attractive tile without checking what opponents have declared.

Solo mahjong and bot practice are different

Bot table games rehearse hand building, calls, discard reading, and defense. Mahjong Solitaire rehearses visual scanning and layered planning. Calling both “mahjong solo” is common, but they do not build the same skills.

In the embedded solitaire board, remove two matching free tiles. A tile needs no piece above it and at least one open long side. Seasons can match other seasons, and flower or noble-plant tiles can match within their group. Press H for a hint, Z to undo, or P to pause.

Online table etiquette

Learn the interface before a timed room, keep a steady pace, and do not disappear without telling the group. If a connection drops, rejoin promptly and use the platform’s reconnect tools. In a manual room, say calls clearly and confirm payments before the next hand.

Treat chat like a real table. Do not reveal concealed information during a live hand, criticize a beginner for taking time, or use outside assistance in ranked play.

Privacy and browser play
